paragraphing for IM Telkom students

Posted by dadangiskandar on October 5, 2009

A paragraph is a basic unit of organization in writing in which a group of related sentences develops one main idea. A paragraph can be as short as one sentence or as long as ten sentences. The number of sentences is unimportant; however, the paragraph should be long enough to develop the main idea clearly.

Gold
Gold, a precious metal, is prized for two important characteristics. First of all, gold has a lustrous beauty that is resistant to corrosion*. Therefore, it is suitable for jewelry, coins and ornament purposes. Gold never needs to be polished and will remain beautiful forever. For example, a Macedonian* coin remains as untarnished* today as the day it was minted twenty-three centuries ago. Another important characteristic of gold is usefulness to industry and science. For many years, it has been used in hundred of industrial application. The most recent use of gold is in astronauts’ suits. A astronauts wear gold-plated heat shields for protection outside the space ship. In conclusion, gold is treasured not only for its beauty, but also for its utility.

A paragraph has three major structural parts: topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence.

The topic sentence state the main idea of the paragraph. It is not only names the topic of the paragraph, but it also limits the topic to one or two areas that can be discussed completely in the space of a single paragraph.

Supporting sentences develop the topic sentence. That is, they explain the topic sentence by giving reason, example, facts, statistic, and quotations.

The concluding sentences signals the end of the paragraph and leaves the reader with important points to remember.

Mango trees (Mangifera indica L.) reach 35–40 m in height, with a crown radius of 10 m. The tree is long-lived with some specimens known to be over 300 years old and still fruiting. In deep soil the taproot descends to a depth of 20 feet, and the profuse, wide-spreading feeder roots also send down many anchor roots which penetrate for several feet. The leaves are evergreen, alternate, simple, 15–35 cm long and 6–16 cm broad; when the leaves are young they are orange-pink, rapidly changing to a dark glossy red, then dark green as they mature. The flowers are produced in terminal panicles 10–40 cm long; each flower is small and white with five petals 5–10 mm long, with a mild sweet odor suggestive of lily of the valley. The fruit takes from three to six months to ripen.

The ripe fruit is variable in size and color, and may be yellow, orange, red or green when ripe, depending on the cultivar. When ripe, the unpeeled fruit gives off a distinctive resinous sweet smell. In its center is a single flat oblong seed that can be fibrous or hairy on the surface, depending on the cultivar. Inside the seed coat 1–2 mm thick is a thin lining covering a single embryo, 4–7 cm long, 3–4 cm wide, and 1 cm thick.
Mangoes have been cultivated in the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years[4] and reached East Asia between the 5th-4th century BC. By the 10th century AD, they were transported to East Africa[4] and subsequently introduced to Brazil, West Indies and Mexico, where climate allows its appropriate growth. The 14th century Muslim traveler, Ibn Battuta, reported it at Mogadishu. Mango is now cultivated as a fruit tree in frost-free tropical and warmer subtropical climates like that of the Indian subcontinent; nearly half of the world’s mangoes are cultivated in India alone.

Other regions where mango is cultivated include North, South and Central America, the Caribbean, south, west and central Africa, Australia, China, Pakistan and Southeast Asia. It is easily cultivated yielding more than 1,000 cultivars, ranging from the “turpentine mango” (named for its strong taste of turpentine, which according to the Oxford Companion to Food some varieties actually contain) to the huevos de toro (“eggs of the bull”, a euphemism for “bull’s testicles”, referring to the shape and size).
Ripe Banganpalli mangoes from Guntur, India.

Though India is the largest producer of mangoes in the world, it accounts for less than one percent of the global mango trade.

Dwarf or semi-dwarf varieties serve as ornamental plants and can be grown in containers.

A wide variety of diseases can afflict mangoes

NTT or East Nusa Tenggara is a province located in eastern Indonesia. And Kupang is the capital of the province. NTT consists of several large islands namely: the island of Timor, where the capital city of Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara, Sumba, Flores and the small islands such as Sabu, Rote, and Alor. Lake Flores called the three colors of the lake because Lake Flores has three colors namely black (Lake for the Ancestors), the red and blue colors (Lake for the Young – Mudi). All three lakes are very unique because it can change the color – the color of the lake that we do not know when the lake is changing color.
There are also other tourist attractions such as the Komodo Island, located adjacent to the eastern island of Flores precisely in West Manggarai regency. On the island of Komodo or tersebutlah big lizard lived.
Another interesting thing from NTT itself is a traditional musical instrument which comes from Rote Island named Sasando. This is Sasando learned instruments made of palm leaves.

Snow is a type of precipitation in the form of crystalline water ice, consisting of a multitude of snowflakes that fall from clouds. Since snow is composed of small ice particles, it is a granular material. It has an open and therefore soft structure, unless packed by external pressure. Snowflakes come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Types which fall in the form of a ball due to melting and refreezing, rather than a flake, are known as graupel, with ice pellets and snow grains as examples of graupel. Snowfall amount, and its related liquid equivalent precipitation amount, are determined using a variety of different rain gauges.
The process of precipitating snow is called snowfall. Snowfall tends to form within regions of upward motion of air around a type of low-pressure system known as an extratropical cyclone. Snow can fall poleward of their associated warm fronts and within their comma head precipitation patterns, which is called such due to its comma-like shape of the cloud and precipitation pattern around the poleward and west sides of extratropical cyclones. Where relatively warm water bodies are present, for example due to water evaporation from lakes, lake-effect snowfall becomes a concern downwind of the warm lakes within the cold cyclonic flow around the backside of extratropical cyclones. Lake-effect snowfall can be locally heavy. Thundersnow is possible within a cyclone’s comma head and within lake effect precipitation bands. In mountainous areas, heavy snow is possible where upslope flow is maximized within windward sides of the terrain at elevation, if the atmosphere is cold enough.
Once on the ground, snow can be categorized as powdery when fluffy, granular when it begins the cycle of melting and refreezing, and eventually ice once it packs down, after multiple melting and refreezing cycles, into a dense mass called snow pack. When powdery, snow moves with the wind from the location where it originally landed, forming deposits called snowdrifts which may have a depth of several meters. After attaching to hillsides, blown snow can evolve into a snow slab, which is an avalanche hazard on steep slopes. The existence of a snowpack keeps temperatures colder than they would be otherwise, as the whiteness of the snow reflects most sunlight, and the absorbed heat goes into melting the snow rather than increasing its temperature. The water equivalent of snowfall is measured to monitor how much liquid is available to flood rivers from meltwater which will occur during the upcoming spring. Snow cover can protect crops from extreme cold. If snowfall stays on the ground for a series of years uninterrupted, the snowpack develops into a mass of ice called glacier. Fresh snow absorbs sound, lowering ambient noise over a landscape due to the trapped air between snowflakes acting to minimize vibration. These acoustic qualities quickly minimize, and reverse once a layer of freezing rain falls on top of snow cover. Walking across snowfall produces a squeaking sound at low temperatures. For motion pictures, the sound of people walking across snow are duplicated through the use cornstarch, salt, and cat litter.
The term snow storm can describe a heavy snowfall while a blizzard involves snow and wind, obscuring visibility. Snow shower is a term for an intermittent snowfall, while flurry is used for very light, brief snowfalls. Snow can fall more than a meter at a time during a single storm in flat areas, and meters at a time in rugged terrain, such as mountains. When snow falls in significant quantities, travel by foot, car, airplane and other means becomes highly restricted, but other methods of mobility become possible: the use of snowmobiles, snowshoes and skis. When heavy snow occurs early in the fall, significant damage occurs to trees still in leaf. Areas with significant snow each year can store the winter snow within an ice house, which can be used to cool structures during the following summer.

    HOW I LEARNT SWIMMING

Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was learn how to swim. I was always afraid of the water, but I decided that swimming was an important skill that I should learn. I also thought it would be good exercise and help me to become physically stronger. What I didn’t realize was that learning to swim would also make me a more confident person.
New situations always make me a bit nervous, and my first swimming lesson was no exception. After I changed into my bathing suit in the locker room, I stood timidly by the side of the pool waiting for the teacher and other students to show up. After a couple of minutes the teacher came over. She smiled and introduced herself, and two more students joined us. Although they were both older than me, they didn’t seem to be embarrassed about not knowing how to swim. I began to feel more at ease.
We got into the pool, and the teacher had us put on brightly colored water wings to help us stay afloat. One of the other students, May, had already taken the beginning class once before, so she took a kickboard and went splashing off by herself. The other student, Jerry, and I were told to hold on to the side of the pool and shown how to kick for the breaststroke. One by one, the teacher had us hold on to a kickboard while she pulled it through the water and we kicked. Pretty soon Jerry was off doing this by himself, traveling at a fast clip across the short end of the pool.
Things were not quite that easy for me, but the teacher was very patient. After a few more weeks, when I seemed to have caught on with my legs, she taught me the arm strokes. Now I had two things to concentrate on, my arms and my legs. I felt hopelessly uncoordinated. Sooner than I imagined, however, things began to feel “right” and I was able to swim! It was a wonderful free feeling – like flying, maybe – to be able to shoot across the water.
Learning to swim was not easy for me, but in the end my persistence paid off. Not only did I learn how to swim and to conquer my fear of the water, but I also learned something about learning. Now when I am faced with a new situation I am not so nervous. I may feel uncomfortable to begin with, but I know that as I practice being in that situation and as my skills get better, I will feel more and more comfortable. It is a wonderful, free feeling when you achieve a goal you have set for yourself.

  5. Indonesia. A country famous for it’s many cultural backgrounds, tourism sites, wonderful scenery, spices, the friendly people. But that was a long time ago. A long time before corruption, separitism, poverty, violence, child abuse, and many other things that happens which threatens our nation.

How could our nation compete with other nations when we just cant build our nation first ? How could it compete when there’s still about 17,8% of it’s people still live below the poverty line ? The answer is of course no. A lot of bad things happen to our nation because the people who live in it. It’s actually funny to think like this but it is the truth. People do illegal logging and then the flood comes. Leaving hundreds of people dead, destruction for our nation. There are lot’s of examples I could give to tell you how damaged our nation is.
First an example relating to the environment. Illegal logging like I’ve mentioned before effects the tourism aspect .What is left for tourist to enjoy of a forest without trees and animals? Another is pollution. Pollution not only from vehicles but also wildfires done by men causing heavy smog that not only our nation is effected but also other neigbouring countries like Malaysia and Singapore.

Second is an example related to the politics. As we know there are significant separatist movements in the provinces of Aceh and Papua that have led to armed conflict and allegations of human rights abuses. Following a long standing guerrilla war between the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian military. In Papua, there has been a significant rise in the levels of violence and human rights abuses. They don’t care about other people’s lives and what will the war bring to our nation.

Third is an example related to the tourism. We all know about the bombing that happened in Bali, especially the most deadly bombing that happened in 2002, killing 202 people (including 164 international tourists) in the resort town of Kuta. The attacks and travel warnings issued by other countries have severely damaged our nations important tourist industry and the economy’s foreign investment prospects. We lost lives and maybe even lost the trust of other nation.

Fourth is an example of the entertainment that is consumed by our people. Lots of entertainment that is provided are full of violence, pornography, that isn’t suitable to watch and doesn’t give any benefit for us. Mass media has a strong connection with the community’s social life and culture. What exists in community will be reflected in media, and what is publicized in media will be imitated by the community. This is like an endless rotating wheel. How can the community mature while the mass media always serves materials of poor quality? On the other side, how can mass media change while the community keeps wanting poor quality materials? How can these poor materials that the media provides build our country ?

Fifth is an example that relates to the education. Even though the government has given the 9 year free of paying for education and BOS funds, there are still a lot of children out there that doesn’t receive education which is their right to have. Instead they wander on streets begging for money while they should actually study and play at school. BOS funds are not effective too. We can see that even in education corruption occures.

The childrens at school are still told to pay for their school things while there are BOS funds given by the government.
All of these five examples that I’ve given to you are all related to the aspects that can effect the continuity of our nation. If we cant fix the damage that happens in here, I am sure that we can’t proceed further to a better future.
It is our responsibility to help our nation get out of this bad state. It wont do us any harm just by helping to make our nation a better place to live in. But it will if we dont try to. Why don’t we try it as long as we can still do it ? It may sound hard, but that what makes it harder to do if we keep on saying we can’t do anything to change our nation, to make it a better place. We should try first before saying we can’t.

So, believe in ourselves. And the last “let’s do our best to save our nation !” Thank you for your attention.

Uh oh … I beg my friends understood well. You may also have experienced the same thing with what I experienced this, but not all of you who think mobile is one of your soul mate. Huhuhuhu. Forgive me if I was hipeerbola, but it is in fact my friend!!. Everything that I write this really describe my hearth right now .. huhuhuhuhu. Yeah, actually it’s all a pure my mistake. I was wrong because it does not take care of both while being in a crowded place like that

Well … than you wondered what caused of me to be a little too much about the incident ‘unfortunate’, let me explain!. Before that I wanted to ask you .. how did you feel while losing things you love most?? Yak like that. Moreover considering that mobile phones were already three years with you whenever and wherever I was, even more so when we remember all the phone’s memory. Starting from sms-sms important, to the important numbers. How I did not stagger like this if I can not remember anymore to get all of that with any business? Huahhh … you understand right?

And this is the worst experience of my life record. But over all, I could take a lesson from this incident .. Maybe god is testing the patience I once yak … At least from this terrible event I was able to learn to not depend on the same my mobilephone Hahay. : P

  8. A HARD EXPLODE HAPPENED IN SULAWESI SELATAN

An explode happened in bone, Sulawesi Selatan at 11:00 AM. on the result, several student in the school forced went to home earlier. “There are people’s activities, in principle about student spontaneity go home earlier because the explode produced voice supposed as a earthquake symbol”, said the Division Chief of Public Relation of Mabes Polri, Irjen Pol. Nanan Soekarna, in his short massage received by the journalist, Thursday.
The explode could hear very hard by the local people. They said, “The hard explode could hear in Bone and Wajo.
Little possible this explode was sourced from meteor. Because at these time, seldom there is a strange thing can past over the earth’s orbit tool, where the earth head position presented with sun. Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Institute (BMKG) Makassar predicted these explode sourced from little earthquake with powerfull 1.9 Richter Scale.
